Meet Jamil Burns
Jamil Burns joined us this month as a gardening intern to assist with our Organic Garden. He is a recent graduate of University of the Pacific and holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Science, though food and the environment were not always his passion. Several professors at Pacific and the experience of working in the student garden sparked the passion inside him to create a healthier and more sustainable future for this world through food. It would make him happy to be able to teach people the importance of knowing where their food comes from and how itís grown, and even happier to see people become passionate about growing their own food like he does.
Upon arrival at Big Heart, his first thoughts were: "Well, there's a lot of work to do, but I can see the potential." Jamil joins us thanks to a grant from Alameda Countyís Stop Waste program; he will undertake improvements to the garden, including a composting program; work with children attending the Arts at Bartís Camp; and give multiple presentations on recycling and composting to the parish, BHWC clients, and the community.
